In 4 weeks, we’ll create an expressive painting that has power to evoke mood and feelings.
We'll tell a story better than a photo -- without painting every single detail, and mostly using color!
We leverage complementary color relationships to add drama and compelling resonance. We use color to establish space, mass and light, and even dynamic movement.
We develop a new vocabulary of color and dialog with the paint. This allows the painting to teach us as we gain skill solving color problems.
Yes, if you paint, you need to know color theory. (Cringe)
But it doesn’t need to be tedious!
Regardless your paint medium of choice, this class is for you if:
- You struggle to find or mix the colors you want on the palette
- Your paintings turn muddy or lose focus the more you work on them.
- You want to create different moods or feelings in your painting, but don’t know how.

Understanding the ebb and flow of color dialog frees our mental process. Allow your intuition to become, stronger, more active and free to make its own choices!

- Gestural Painting Techniques:Designed to help you get beyond matching your reference photo and expand your own unique voice and style.
- Limited Palette Choice:Limiting the palette to just 6 colors allows you to regard the entire color wheel without being overwhelmed by color choices (and saves you money on materials!)
- Demonstrations and Discussion: Each lesson includes step-by-step demos in color theory with lively and exciting exercises in color physics. These will definitely transform your point of view!
- Lesson Recording:So you can pause and rewatch lessons at your own pace.
- Weekly Personal Zoom Critique: Optional (15 minute) 1-on-1 session to affirm your progress and get help making decisions so you can move to the next lesson smoothly. You'll choose your special time for Review day once a week. Each session will be recorded so you can pause and rewatch at your own pace.
